This past weekend I got to go to one of my most favorite places in the world. I haven’t gotten out much since COVID started throwing a monkey wrench in all the fun, so I was SO excited haha!
I got to go to Sephora! Now, let me tell you why Sephora is my favorite because we all know you can buy pretty much everything sold there for cheaper online. But, for me, it’s not all about how much I spend, but also what my experience was along the buyer journey. When you go into Sephora, you’re immediately greeted by someone, “Hi! Welcome! Are you looking for something special?”. I ALWAYS say yes and let them help.
Now, why is that? Because I know that every single thing sold at Sephora is available to sample, so that means that the sales rep helping me is not only going to help me find what I need, they’re also going to let me touch it, smell it, feel it, wear it. And if it’s something I’ve never used before; they’re going to show me how and there’s never a hard push to buy.
To me, and many other Sephora die-hards, this is an amazing value! It makes me excited to hear and learn about all the different products that the reps are always so knowledgeable about and how those products are going to work together with what I’m already using. It’s a value most other places don't offer and it’s that value that keeps me coming back for more!
And it’s this value that makes me ask myself, how am I providing value to my customers?
Even ones who might just be window shopping for now. What am I doing to educate them about my products and how they can use them to meet their needs? Am I providing a fun and exciting experience where people “Get to try before they buy”? Do people look forward to hearing from me because they know they’re going to learn?
I love to shop at Sephora because it reminds me that when you provide value, you don't need hard sales. Because when you are more concerned with providing value than with who’s buying,
people will happily spend their money on you.
