Has anyone ever doubted you or told you or told you that you were going to fail? I have... my entire life. But I’ve also had a lot of support and encouragement too.
Once when I was a kid, my dad got me this old broken lawnmower. He told me “if you can make it run by the end of the summer, I’ll give you $50”. My mom was PISSED. She thought girls should be clean, playing dolls or crafting, NOT building lawnmowers! “Girls can’t do that, what if she gets hurt, you’re setting her up to fail.” At first, it felt impossible...her constant reminder that I would fail rang loud and clear. She was right, I didn’t know anything about lawnmowers, I was 9 years old!! But how come boys could build and fix things and not me?! I could do everything the boys could do… but better! F- the boys! I’m strong! I’m smart! My dad believes in me!! I know I can do it too! So, I took on the task!
My dad supplied me with the tools I needed, the manual, and gloves of course so I didn’t ruin my manicure LOL! All week long, I’d read that manual, pull that lawnmower apart and take inventory of the parts that needed to be replaced. Then, on my dad’s days off we’d go to the u-pick and I’d find the parts I needed. Once I was sure I had everything to get the job done we’d go back home and I’d get to work. It was REALLY hard work!! There were so many times that summer I wanted to quit! Like when I smashed my pinky finger so bad my fingernail fell off, or every time I KNEW I had the final part to get it running and it still wouldn’t start, or when I spilled oil everywhere and my mom made me haul what seemed like a million pounds of kitty litter to cover it up and sent me to my room.
I felt like I was failing… and my mom was constantly reminding me that I should just quit, but I didn’t give up! Week in and week out, I worked and studied and kept on trying. Until one day, near the end of the summer, it hit me. I knew exactly what it needed! I made a note in my little pocket notebook and impatiently waited for my dad to get off work. I was so excited to tell him! To get his confirmation! To go to the store! When he got home from work, he drove me to get the part, helped me with the finishing touches and voila! It was running!!!! I was so excited!! My dad was so excited for me!
He knew all along I could do it! He told me to never quit. Encouraged me all along the way and told me to block the noise of nay-sayers. Empowered me to make my own decisions, even when I cried and thought I couldn’t do it. Even when I felt like I’d never figure it out. He was there supporting me all along the way. Looking back now, I know how important this support really was, not only in building that old lawnmower
But in life… It made me believe I could do ANYTHING I put my mind to. It made me realize that even when I’m hurt or I don't know the way I can still accomplish amazing things. This is why I became a coach. It’s why I radically support my clients to do incredible things and amazing things they never thought possible. Like Melissa, who after her very first meeting with me doubled her prices and proceeded to make 4 new sales less than one week! Or Leilani who is completely booked up for the next 2 months and is getting ready to hire her first real employee!
It’s because they have support, they were empowered to take action. Encouraged to dream big. Ready to grow their businesses in amazing ways they never even thought possible! So, tell me… do you have someone to support you in this way? Are you ready to land more clients? Are you ready to charge higher prices? Are you ready to get the support you need to completely skyrocket your business and change your life?
