I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was 19 and working in a pawn shop. Experiencing that restlessness that comes when you look at your life ahead of you at such a young age. That longing for something more… there has to be something more.
I told my manager “I’m going to run my own business one day… I just can’t imagine being someone’s employee FOREVER!” The prospect of that was a truly terrible one for me. He laughed at me... poor young girl...clueless about life and what it had in store… He said, “Well, you’re still young. You’ll figure it out”.
I knew what he meant. He meant I’d soon learn the lessons life had taught him. That the universe doesn’t care about your plans. That you can’t just decide things like that. But what he didn’t know is that there was a fire in me. A feeling and knowing that all the doubt every person in the world could throw my way could never quench that flame. Those butterflies in your stomach and chest tightening excitement you get when nothing’s even happened yet but you just KNOW something amazing is in store for you.
I knew I was supposed to do more... To be more. I just had to answer the call.
6 months after that conversation I quit that job. I was going to start my own web design company. To be my own boss…” unemployable” as my dad would say. I was terrified… What if everyone was right? What if I failed? But what if I didn’t?! Those butterflies and excitement kept me alive. Pushed me every day to new heights. Day after day, year after year.
Drove me to bigger, better dreams. Drove me to learn more, to want more, to need more. Drove me to hire staff and learn to be an amazing leader for my team. Drove me to better myself so I could make bigger and better sales for my company…MY company! Drove me to become a coach so I could show people how to carry out their dreams of an online business too!
I did it … It’s been 13 years since that conversation with my old manager...13 years of building this dream. Of learning and growing.
And you know what, he was right… I did figure it out.
